If you're having to measure the opening rather than the old piece of glass, the main tip we can offer is to ensure that you leave at least 2mm's room between the glass and any framework. This ensures that the glass has room to expand when exposed to heat. If you measure the size of the opening and don't knock anything off, there is a high chance that the glass will break during the first fire.
